A Tiny Caterpillar. A Serious Airborne Hazard.

The Oak Processionary Moth / Thaumetopoea processionea (OPM) is becoming an increasing challenge across Europe. And while the caterpillars feed on oak trees, the real danger comes from their microscopic toxic hairs. These hairs easily become airborne and can cause severe skin irritation, eye problems and respiratory issues – even long after the caterpillars have left the nest.

Professional removal is essential. Sweeping or using leaf blowers can spread the hazardous hairs even further. Instead, specialized extraction equipment is used to safely remove the caterpillars, nests and contaminated material while minimizing the risk of airborne exposure.

Across Europe and now also detected in Denmark

Germany for example, has been dealing with a widespread infestation of these hazardous caterpillars. DC 2900 Longopac dust extractor has been successfully used to safely remove from playgrounds etc. and securely contain them, helping to prevent further exposure. With the Longopac system, oak processionary caterpillars are safely contained in a sealed system, minimizing the risk of exposure and allowing for safe disposal.

At Dustcontrol, we provide professional dust extraction solutions suitable for this type of hazardous removal work. Our H-class extraction systems help contain and collect dangerous airborne particles, protecting both operators and the surrounding environment.

Warmer climate makes the caterpillar spread

Although the Oak Processionary Moth is not yet established in Sweden, researchers warn that warmer climates could make parts of southern Scandinavia suitable for its spread in the coming decades. Being prepared before new hazards arrive is always better than reacting afterwards.
